Allan went travelling around the world with sketch book and watercolour paints to India, Nepal, Australia and New Zealand
The Artists bio
Born and raised on a farm in Galloway in the remote southwest of Scotland. Allan’s childhood was spent growing up in rugged scenic surroundings with the Southern Uplands, woodlands, nature and sea as a backyard to discover. Living in such a remote rural environment had an uplifting effect on him and from an early age he was inspired to pick up a brush and start painting.
Allan worked as a Graphic Artist for several years in the print industry. A self-taught artist, he has spent many decades learning his craft through persevering with the medium that can be so unforgiving, before rounding of his art education with an Advanced Diploma in Art and Design in 1999.
Allan’s love of the great outdoors that was kindled in early life living in Galloway, is matched by his concern for the environment, and as a result worked for several years in environment education interpreting and conserving the countryside. This period was to be very inspirational with much development in his painting.
In 2005, Allan went travelling around the world with sketch book and watercolour paints to India, Nepal, Australia and New Zealand. On returning from his travels, Allan decided to become a full time painter/tutor and he set up a studio, in a former church in SW Scotland, where he still lives and works. Inspired by his visit to the Himalayas, he has since travelled regularly to paint in remote wilderness areas in Tibet and China. However, he gains most inspiration from his beloved homeland and especially the West Coast and Galloway.
