THISWAYforthat – For what? For Ethically Sourced Art and Arts Experiences

The Artists bio

I am a Mixed Media Artist working under the name THISWAYforthat make unique ‘Up-Cycled’ creations inspired by good stories, road signs, skip finds and my environment. Working mainly with a variety of Up-cycled materials and found or gifted objects alongside; oils, acrylic, textiles, installation, performance and photography.

Taking part in the last two Open Studio Ayrshire events was a fantastic opportunity to create some new small edition items of clothing and homewares alongside my other artworks. Following last year’s event I have been the featured artist in two uniquely inspirational creative spaces in Glasgow; Koo-ee Southside and Brutti Ma Buoni at the Brunswick Hotel. Koo-ee has now become the main stockist of my merchandise and alongside other specialist limited editions, stocks my cushions, cards, tee-shirts and tea- towels.

I have worked as an Artist since graduating in 1999 with a degree in Constructed Textiles from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee, and I can’t imagine a more fulfilling vocation. Throughout my career I have developed and delivered bespoke individual and group arts experiences, arts facilitation training and creative evaluation. For many years specialising in collaborating with those experiencing mental health issues, multiple sensory impairments and communication difficulties to develop their artistic practice.

Returning to live and work in Ayrshire and focus on my artistic practice I have become a committee member of Open Studios Ayrshire (OSA), specialising in accessibility. I have joined the Ayrshire Chambers of Commerce and initiated collaborations with various Ayrshire artists and community groups.
I believe that we should help others whenever we are able. During Open Studios Ayrshire 2015 I committed to give 20% of my earnings from orders during the event to purchase Ethical Organic Food for the Ayrshire (East) Foodbank, resulting in over £260 worth of food being donated. For OSA 2016 I developed a range of Compact Mirrors and Up-Cycled pouches which are hand constructed from curtain fabric, old tights and bra straps, 50% of my taking from these pouches is being donated to purchase new bra’s for underprivileged women in Africa. I also accept any donation of old bras towards this cause.
THISWAYforthat also encourages ‘Pay it Up’ and ‘Pay it forward’ opportunities to ensure finance is not a reason to prevent someone accessing my art, products or experiences, as I feels art should be accessible to all. As an ‘Up Cycled Creator’ I also love a bit of barter.

My aim is to produce colourful vibrant art which carries positive and thought provoking messages, often depicting subjects that raise awareness of societal issues and always telling a story. Whether commissioning a one of bespoke piece for your home, choosing from my designed merchandise range or a unique art experience, purchasing from THISWAYforthat is a meaningful investment which aims to give you a good feeling.

I hope you will join me at OSA 2017 for what promises to be a fully interactive art experience, with opportunities to create your own masterpieces and get involved in my working practice. There will be something for everyone so please bring along your friends and family.
