I was brought up in an arty family
The Artists bio
I am Justin Wilson AKA Justin Illusions, a commercial artist, a sculptor, set builder and prop maker. I do most of my artwork from a converted farm steading just outside Moscow near Kilmarnock.
I was brought up in an arty family on the Wirral Merseyside, with a Cartoonist grandfather, a Sculptor dad and an Illustrator mum. I trained in Fine Art at Hornsey College of Art in London in the mid 80s. I have worked under the name of Justin Illusions ever since, for stage, exhibition, TV and feature films as a designer, model maker, sculptor and puppet maker. I worked originally in London, then moved to Ayrshire 16 years ago to bring up my son and establish a studio in Scotland.
Some of my recent commercial work includes a giant Dragon puppet and illuminating clouds for the National Theatre of Scotland, statues for Scottish Opera’s Don Giovani, dead bodies for “Shetland” an ITV drama, a bust of Alfred Nobel for a film, The Wife, and freelance work on a new major Si Fi feature called “Life” both coming out in 2017.
Since moving here to Ayrshire I have taken on various local community and public art commissions, including a carved stone monument in Drongan as a Tribute to the miners, an oak bench carved and painted from children’s artwork and carved stone animals in a play area in Eglington country park.
Alongside my professional career, I have undertaken many personal projects, making sculptures from wood, stone, metal, living willow and recycled materials, and producing paintings, drawings, photographs and films, and will be showing some of these at the open studio event.
