Gwen is originally from Edinburgh but with a father from Ayr, many summers were spent on the beach in Ayr, watching the rain come in over Arran.
Since moving back to Scotland and landing in Largs recently, she been overwhelmed by her surroundings and constantly seeks to capture something of the landscape she sees every day. She takes inspiration from the forms of the land and seascapes of North Ayrshire, a rich tapestry of air, land and sea.
The paintings often begin with layered monotype collage, followed by water-based mediums, to create an underpainting. This is then sealed before the work is completed using oil paint to describe the landscape.
Colour is used in an abstract way, seeking to highlight the many facets of changing light.
