Somewhat bizarre – but I am a Caribbean Ocean artist based in south west Scotland.
My studio sits in the hills of Galloway, south of Barrhill
Since 2018, my art has been selling in the Ritz-Carlton Art Gallery in Grand Cayman. They continue to represent me to this day.
My daughter has been in the Cayman Islands for the past 18 years. Inspired by the beautiful oceans of the Caribbean, I found myself obsessed with creating art which could reflect these beautiful blues. Flying on a small plane, to the sister islands, had me yearning to bring this vision and emotion to everyone.
My art is created on huge wood birch panels. I work in very large pieces, I have had numerous commissions, and featured in high end magazines such as “Real Life” and “Indoors Cayman”
I have been participating in Cayman Art Week for four years running, and last year, launched my series of “augmented reality” works.
My AR works, are the result of two years of study, to bring an animated digital layer to my original works. It is very new – and has to be seen to be believed.
I want my viewers to feel truly immersed in the ocean. To feel the sea, the sunshine, the tide creeping on one’s toes – the birds, the dolphins, the whales.. everyone can be lost in the ocean in both sound and vision in their own home.
Each of my original works takes months to complete. I work in a fire safe studio where I create work with multiple media including oil pigments, resin, artists crete, gold leaf, diamond dust, molding paste, plaster, clay, hand fired recycled glass and acrylics. My process is a multiple layering process where I set layers on fire, and sand back to the layer below – The final layer will. be a finish in a casting resin giving the art the glass finish I seek to portray my oceans.
My husband and I own a smokehouse here in Galloway, when I approached my 60s, I made the decision to return to my first love and passion – my art.
We still operate our smoked salmon company – indeed, my studio sits only yards from the smokehouse.
The sea has always been our life, as commercial salmon fishermen – the ocean is truly in my soul – I believe that passion, is now forever in my art.
